South Africa Horse Back Safaris prides itself as having some of
the best horses in the trail game.
All the horses are selected by Steven Rufus who himself is an advanced
event rider. The horses are selected with the same criteria as would
be for selecting an event horse. There are various breeds of South
African horses; boerperd, SA warmblood and crosses.
These horses have to adapt to the harsh environment of the mountains
and crossing slippery streams to fast gallops on the plains, and
standing their ground against the Big Five game.
For the Songimvelo Safari, clients should be competent at walk,
trot, canter and gallop. Confident novice riders can be accepted,
but should have an independent seat and be secure in the saddle should
they need to react quickly. The riding is challenging and technical
since it is wilderness riding with steep climbs and descents, river
crossings and tricky rocky terrain to cross. There are some opportunities
for fast riding on the plains. It is not suitable for nervous riders.
Novice riders are accepted at Dawsons Lodge and the riding will
be tailored to suit the ability of the clients
Thoroughbred cross/Shire; Boerperd; Boerperd cross/Quarterhorse;
Arab cross/Quarterhorse; Anglo Arab. Hanovarian cross/Boerperd. Range
in height from 15hh to 17hh. All horses are selected with the same
criteria as for a sport horse (pace, temperament, confirmation, rideability)
and are fit and in good condition.
